Alaska is a U.S. state situated in the northwest extremity of the North American continent. Bordering the state to the east is Yukon, a Canadian territory, and the Canadian province of British Columbia and the Arctic Ocean to the north. - Alaska is the largest state of America with 663,268 sq. miles total land area and an estimated 710,231 population in 2015. In 1959, it was admitted to the union as the 49th.It was dubbed as “Seward’s Folly” after U.S. Secretary of State William Seward, after the acquisition by the United States from Russia in 1867.
- Indigenous people occupied Alaska prior to the contact of European people to the area. Some of them were the Tlingit people well known for their matrilineal society and culture, the Haida for their unique art, and the Aleut people known for their seafaring skills.
- Russia controlled most of the territory from the late 1700s until 1867, until it was purchased by the United States for $7.2 million, or about two cents an acre.
- By the 1890s, the discovery and further development of gold rush in the territory brought a lot of settlers in Alaska.
- During World War II, Attu and Kiska the two Alaskan islands was occupied by the Japanese for more than a year.
- Geographically, Alaska possessed numerous islands and mountain ranges. Making it face an estimated 5,000 earthquakes every year. In March of 1964, Prince William Sound experienced the strongest earthquake with a magnitude of 9.2.
- It has a mid-latitude oceanic climate in southern sections and sub-arctic oceanic climate in northern parts. With large production of petroleum, salmon, cod, pollock, and crab. Due to its surrounding waterways such as the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Pacific Ocean, Bering Strait, Beaumont Sea, and the Arctic Ocean.
- Some of its famous citizens are Vitus Bering (explorer), William A. Egan (1st state governor), Joe Juneau (prospector), Jack London (author), and John Muir (naturalist, explorer).
